History of the Rebekah Degree:

On September 20, 1851, IOOF became the first national fraternity to accept both men and women when it formed the Daughters of Rebekah, known today as Rebekahs. Schuyler Colfax, [Vice President of the United States (1869–1873) under President Ulysses S. Grant], was the force behind the movement.

Famous Rebekahs:
  • Lucy Hobbs Taylor, first woman dentist in the US (1833-1910)
  • Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States
  • Doreen Patterson Reitsma, Wren in the Royal Canadian Navy
  • Bina West, one of the leaders of the Ladies of the Maccabees in 1920

What Does It Mean To Be A Rebekah?

In the Rebekah degree the stories of prominent women of the Bible are used to express universal traits that exemplify honorable living and courageous women; that teach exemplary living grounded in Friendship, Love and Truth, the cornerstone for both Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. The character of Rebekah exemplifies beauty, grace, patience, hospitality and a humble spirit of service to others in Biblical stories and serves as the name of this degree.

Rebekah Charitable and Community Services:

Rebekah Children's Services is a public benefit corporation founded in 1897 by the California Rebekah Lodge as an orphanage. They now provide foster care placement and support services, parent support, prevention and early specific needs of the child and family whenever categorical services do not work. Their services include outpatient therapy, education to the community, and behavioral health care services to children and families living in Santa Clara, Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties, through a central care facility in Gilroy California.

Rebekah also shares in retirement community opportunities through Odd Fellows Homes of California, one of which is nearby in Saratoga California.
